vertebrates
Vertebrates are animals that have a spinal cord running down their backs that carries nervous messages from their brain. This cord is enclosed in a structure made of bone called the 'spine'.
Because of the chord, vertebrates are given the name of chordates and are placed in the phylum Chordata. There are five major classes of vertebrates/chordates - mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish.
